The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a police shooting in southwest Calgary that left a 36-year-old man hospitalized.
On July 30, shortly before 2:00 a.m., Calgary Police Service officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of Bridlemeadows Manor S.W. following reports of a man firing a bow and arrow in a backyard. Police had already been called to the same home earlier that night.
Upon arriving, officers learned the 36-year-old man was inside the residence in breach of his court-ordered release conditions, which prohibited him from being at the address or possessing weapons. Officers communicated with the suspect, repeatedly asking him to exit the home unarmed.
Approximately an hour later, the man walked out the front door carrying a bow and arrow and advanced toward officers standing in the driveway. Police responded by deploying a police service dog, a 40-mm less-lethal impact weapon, and a service pistol in close succession.
Following the shooting, officers immediately rendered first aid. Paramedics transported the man to the hospital in critical condition, where his status was later upgraded to stable.
Independent Investigation Launched
The Police Review Commission directed ASIRT to examine the incident as a Level 1 matter. Under Alberta’s Police Act, Level 1 investigations cover incidents involving serious injury, death, or sensitive allegations regarding officer conduct. As an independent, civilian-led agency within the Police Review Commission, ASIRT reviews potential criminal offenses involving police officers across the province.
Separately, the Calgary Police Service is pursuing criminal charges against the 36-year-old man for the events preceding the shooting.
ASIRT noted that these details represent early findings and that the investigation remains ongoing.
