Alberta increases home accessibility grants up to $24,000
Low-income Albertans with mobility challenges can now access significantly higher funding to modify their homes, thanks to an expansion of the province’s Residential Access Modification Program (RAMP). Backed by $24 million from the Canada-Alberta Aging with Dignity agreement, the annual grant cap has risen from $7,500 to $12,000 per person, while the 10-year limit increased from $15,000 to $24,000.
For the first time, funding can also cover modifications to a primary caregiver’s residence.
The program helps offset rising renovation costs for essential upgrades like wheelchair ramps, stair lifts, widened doorways, and specialized bath inserts. RAMP is open to low-income wheelchair users, seniors using four-wheel walkers, and individuals living with progressive neurodegenerative diseases, helping residents remain living independently in their own communities.
“Albertans with mobility challenges deserve to feel safe and independent in their own homes,” said Nathan Neudorf, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services. Families of recipients have praised the move, noting that home modifications like stair lifts provide life-changing safety and independence for loved ones.
