Construction begins on Walden Fire Station and Library, bringing Calgary’s very first combined emergency service and public library hub to the city’s southeast. The $34.2 million project marks a major milestone for growing communities like Walden, Legacy, Chaparral, and Wolf Willow.
Crews officially broke ground at 969 Walden Drive S.E. to replace the temporary emergency setup.
The new facility will feature a 15,000-square-foot, two-bay fire station alongside an 11,000-square-foot public library.
This multi-use development represents the first public civic infrastructure built in Ward 14 since 1976.
The Province of Alberta contributed $4.1 million toward the overall project costs.
“This project reflects the kind of thoughtful infrastructure investment that helps build a more connected, resilient and livable Calgary,” said Mayor Jeromy Farkas. “By bringing essential services together in one location and making efficient use of public resources, we’re creating lasting value for residents and helping build thriving communities.”
The existing temporary fire station has operated on the site since 2020.
It will remain fully active throughout construction to ensure uninterrupted emergency service for nearby homes.
Once finished, the library will offer children’s spaces, public meeting rooms, books, technology, and community programming.
Calgary Fire Chief Steve Dongworth noted that the facility will strengthen emergency response times across the south.
Calgary Public Library CEO Sarah Meilleur highlighted that the project unites lifelong learning and public safety under one roof.
Contractors expect the permanent complex to open to the public in 2028.
