Provincial experts celebrated the Calgary downtown safety project provincial award today for transforming core urban spaces across the city’s central business district.
The Alberta Professional Planners Institute formally presented the prestigious honor to municipal organizers from The City of Calgary alongside partner firm DIALOG.
The comprehensive initiative focused on systematically analyzing ten strategic locations across the central urban core.
Project leaders aimed to identify practical ways to make public streets, walkways, and gathering spots feel significantly safer and more welcoming.
To guide physical design changes, the team utilized proven Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design strategies.
These specialized urban planning techniques focus on using strategic lighting, open sightlines, and smart landscaping to discourage criminal activity before it starts.
Rather than publishing an abstract study, project planners prioritized immediate, hands-on implementation across target areas.
Organizers brought local business owners, resident groups, municipal service crews, and safety specialists together to develop realistic, actionable solutions.
Work crews have already completed several key physical improvements across downtown.
Upgrades include installing brighter LED street lights, modernizing physical safety infrastructure, and redesigning pedestrian spaces to foster higher public activity.
“This recognition reflects the incredible collaboration behind the project,” said Darshan Tailor, Business Strategist with The City of Calgary. “Businesses, community organizations, City teams and technical experts all contributed their knowledge and experience. Together, we developed practical solutions that are helping create safer public spaces.”
City leaders emphasize that vibrant, well-lit streetscapes play a vital role in local economic recovery.
Creating secure environments encourages more residents, workers, and tourists to visit shops and dining venues downtown.
The annual provincial planning award celebrates groundbreaking urban initiatives that deliver lasting benefits to communities throughout Alberta.
Calgary officials plan to apply lessons learned from this project to future neighborhood revitalizations across the entire municipality.
