Steel Company Fined $138K After Calgary Worker Injured in Machinery

InterPro Pipe & Steel Inc., formerly known as Evraz Inc. NA Canada, was fined $138,000 in the Calgary Court of Justice on Aug. 5 after pleading guilty to an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act charge for failing to ensure worker safety. All other charges against the company were withdrawn.
The conviction stems from a Sept. 11, 2023, incident at a Calgary steel manufacturing facility, where a worker suffered serious injuries after becoming entangled in equipment while greasing the machinery.
The $138,000 penalty includes a mandatory victim fine surcharge. Under provincial law, both the Crown and the company have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or sentence.
Alberta’s OHS laws set basic health and safety standards to protect workers across the province. Charges are laid when non-compliance results in severe injury or death.
