The City of Calgary, Rocky View County, and the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) have signed a project acceleration Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance the Prairie Economic Gateway toward construction.
The agreement creates a joint framework for all three parties to evaluate the commercial, technical, and financial feasibility of the public off-site infrastructure required for the proposed trade and logistics hub east of Calgary. Building on an initial development MOU signed in early 2025, this new phase transitions the project from early engineering design into detailed due diligence and financing strategy ahead of final construction decisions.
Envisioned as a rail-anchored inland port within Canada’s Prairie Core Trade Corridor on the CPKC mainline, the Gateway aims to expand trade capacity, resolve supply chain bottlenecks, and attract private industrial investment to the region.
“This agreement with the Canada Infrastructure Bank is an important step toward finalizing the infrastructure investments needed to unlock new trade, logistics and industrial development, create jobs and strengthen Calgary’s competitiveness,” said Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas.
Rocky View County Reeve Sunny Samra highlighted the regional impact of the project: “Prairie Economic Gateway is a generational opportunity to attract investment, create jobs and strengthen Rocky View County’s position as a trade and transportation hub. The Canada Infrastructure Bank’s expertise will help us assess the infrastructure needs and financing options required to bring this vision to life.”
Led by the municipal partners alongside private rail and development entities, the shovel-ready Gateway initiative is designed to relieve pressure on congested Canadian seaports and strengthen national supply chain resilience.
