The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) continued to be on scene at the landfill fire in southeast Calgary. Crews kept the fire contained overnight, and established firebreaks and ongoing suppression efforts to help reduce fire activity.
Fire department officials issued a statement saying that they understand that citizens have questions about the length of time that it is taking to extinguish the fire; however, the volume and variety of materials involved in landfill fires which burn deep within debris piles make it a complex operation.
Heavy equipment operators are on scene, helping to move large quantities of dirt, in conjunction with firefighting crews to cover and smother the flare ups. This is helping to speed up the process. The work is expected to continue until the fire is fully extinguished.
Residents experiencing breathing difficulty have been advised to seek medical attention or call 911. Those with concerns related to smoke exposure or air quality can get in touch with a registered nurse or contact Health Link 811
Calgarians are being urged to exercise patience as crews manage this complex incident.
