Calgary police’s Organized Crime & Offender Management Section(OCOM) has charged two adults and one youth in connection with an extortion incident, targeting a member of the South Asian community.
In an incident that began in March of this year, a woman started getting repeated demands for money through WhatsApp text and voice messages, which escalated to threats of violence. The suspects had knowledge of the victim’s personal and business affairs, which included her full name, address, business information and information about her family members.
After about twelve hours, just before 4:30 a.m., an unknown suspect fired a gun at the victim’s residence before fleeing in a vehicle.
Physical and digital evidence from the scene, including CCTV footage, helped investigators identify a suspect vehicle and several possible suspects.
On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, a 17-year-old male was arrested for his involvement in facilitating the communication between the victim and those making threats. He was charged with one count of extortion and has since been released from custody. The youth cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
As the investigation continues, police also arrested a woman named Kanureet Kaur, 23 of Chestemere on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, who allegedly provided personal information about the victim that enabled suspects to identify, locate and intimidate the victim and her family. She has been charged with one count of extortion, and has since been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026.
Investigators are also seeking public assistance to locate a third individual wanted on a warrant in relation to the possession of a stolen vehicle used during the shooting.
Tanveer Singh, 21, of Calgary, is wanted on a warrant for possession of stolen property over $5,000. Singh is described as 5’8” tall and approximately 130 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
According to the police, the people charged may be known to the community by different names, or that members of the public may have encountered them under different circumstances. Anyone with information about the extortion incidents or information related to these individuals, including known associates, is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Supt. Jeff Bell, CPS Criminal Operations & Intelligence Division stated that “while these charges are an important step, this investigation is far from over. We continue to ask the public to help us identify everyone involved so we can hold offenders accountable for the fear and harm these crimes have caused.”
Since this series began in April 2025, there have been 51 extortion-related incidents in Calgary. Nineteen shootings have been linked to the series, targeting both extortion victims and suspects. To date, 19 people have been charged with 59 offences in relation to the Calgary series.
