Investigators with the Calgary Police Service are appealing for dashcam footage following a high-speed crash on Deerfoot Trail that threw two passengers out of the vehicle, critically injured two teenagers and a young adult, and narrowly missed hitting first responders and road crews who were already at the scene, responding to an unrelated collision which had temporarily caused the road to be closed down.
The collision occurred around 12:05 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, as a blue Subaru WRX which was travelling northbound on Deerfoot Trail, approached a section of the road which had been closed due to an earlier incident. The driver of the Subaru tried to exit onto 17 Avenue S.E. to bypass the closure, and lost control. This caused the vehicle to roll over several times and barrel dangerously close to first responders and road workers who were actively managing the scene of the earlier collision.
Two passengers were thrown out of the vehicle. A 14-year-old girl and a 19-year-old woman sustained serious, life-altering injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
A third passenger, a 23-year-old man, was also transported to hospital with serious injuries.
The 21-year-old male driver was taken into custody at the scene and treated for minor injuries. While the driver, the male passenger, and the 14-year-old girl have since been released, the 19-year-old woman is still in hospital in serious but stable condition.
Police believe that speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.
After speaking with witnesses, investigators are of the opinion that several vehicles may have been racing along northbound Deerfoot Trail in the moments leading up to the crash.
Police are urging motorists who were travelling along northbound Deerfoot Trail shortly before midnight on September 5 to review their dashcam footage. Anyone with a video recording or relevant information regarding the incident is asked to contact Calgary police.
