Officials from the City of Calgary, Calgary Public Library, and regional project partners gathered to celebrate significant construction milestones at the Symons Valley Library development site in the northwest community of Sage Hill.
Construction is underway on Phase 2 of the project, which will include a new 15,000-square-foot public library facility designed to address gaps in Calgary’s rapidly expanding northwest quadrant. In addition to the library, Phase 2 will include an outdoor community commons green space, surface and underground parking spaces, a street designed to improve access throughout the site for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and motorists, and infrastructure which will support future phases of development and community amenities.
Today’s celebration recognizes significant progress made since construction began on the new library and marks an important milestone in the transformation of the seven-acre site into a vibrant community destination for northwest Calgary. Construction is expected to continue through 2028.
“Symons Valley Library is an investment in the people and communities of northwest Calgary. This project will bring together important amenities, including a new library, public gathering spaces, and future community services such as a Calgary Transit Terminal, helping create a vibrant destination where residents can connect, learn and thrive,” said Mayor Jeromy Farkas.
The completed development will serve as a core gathering space for several fast-growing northwest neighborhoods. Future phases planned for the surrounding land include adjoining land parcels dedicated to non-market housing, mixed-use development, and an integrated Calgary Transit terminal, creating a walkable, multi-use development. The project will create opportunities for connection, recreation and learning close to home.
“After years of advocacy, I’m proud to see this project moving forward and becoming a reality for our growing community. This new purpose-built library will provide a modern, welcoming space designed to meet local needs,” said Ward 2 Councillor Jennifer Wyness.
Calgary Public Library CEO Sarah Meilleur highlighted the fundamental role of public library spaces in supporting municipal growth.
“A growing city needs more libraries, and the welcoming, accessible, community spaces they provide. Calgary Public Library is a vital part of our city’s core civic infrastructure, and the Symons Valley Library creates more connection, learning, and discovery, for our community,” said Meilleur. “This new Library will expand our collections, increase access to early learning opportunities, and bring people together around new ideas and perspectives. Together, we are supporting the community of today, and building the future of our great city.”
