80 percent works on Bearspaw South Feeder Main pipes completed

City crews have achieved a major milestone on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main replacement project. Crews have installed 80 percent of the new feeder main pipe.

“We are pleased to have more than 90 per cent of project materials on-site,” said Darren Finney, Manager of Major Projects. “Crews continue to make strong progress.”

Project leaders expect the new water main to be operational by the end of the year.

Work on Stage A is moving quickly. Workers completed microtunneling 3.7 kilometers of underground pipe between the Shaganappi Pump Station and 73 Street N.W. Crews are now installing valves and welding steel sections.

Meanwhile, open-cut digging continues along 34 Avenue N.W. in Bowness for Stage B. Workers have installed over 1.6 kilometers of pipe so far. Four crews are working simultaneously to reopen roads and sidewalks quickly.

However, crews must briefly shut down the system to connect the new feeder main. As a result, the city will enforce Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and indoor conservation rules during the tie-in phase.

Commissioning will begin in December. Crews will fill, sanitize, and test the pipe before lifting water restrictions.

Additionally, workers identified spots along Parkdale Boulevard requiring targeted repairs this fall. While that section does not need full replacement, crews will work around the clock to swap out worn segments.
