New Calgary water restrictions will begin on Nov. 4 as construction crews complete a major water pipe connection. The city needs these essential Calgary water restrictions to keep tap water flowing safely while workers finish the project.
Crews are connecting the new Bearspaw South Feeder Main to Calgary’s main water system.
To complete this connection safely, workers must temporarily shut down the existing feeder main.
This shutdown reduces Calgary’s daily water supply limit to 500 million liters.
As a result, city-wide Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions will take effect on Nov. 4.
The restrictions will last for about four weeks.
The city is banning all outdoor water use during this period.
Officials are also asking residents to conserve water indoors.
People should run dishwashers and laundry only with full loads.
Residents should flush toilets only when necessary.
Showers should last no longer than three minutes.
These conservation measures apply to Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Strathmore, and Tsuut’ina Nation.
“This is a significant phase of the project,” said Chief Operating Officer of Water Michael Thompson. He noted that the new pipe will lower the risk of future water disruptions.
After finishing the connection, crews will disinfect the pipe and test the water quality.
That final testing process will take two to three weeks.
The entire project remains on schedule to open by the end of the year.
