New winter utility protections are now active across Alberta to keep homes safe and warm through the coldest months. These important safeguards ensure families maintain access to essential heating and power during freezing weather.
Starting Oct. 15, utility providers cannot fully disconnect residential electricity services.
Beginning Nov. 1, natural gas services cannot be fully disconnected by retailers either.
These rules stay active until April 15. They protect vulnerable residents from losing power during severe weather.
Province-wide rules also ban disconnections year-round whenever temperatures drop below freezing within 24 hours.
“Having reliable home heating and power isn’t a luxury – it’s a lifeline,” said Minister of Affordability and Utilities RJ Sigurdson. He noted the rules keep every family safe and warm on cold nights.
The Utilities Consumer Advocate is currently reaching out to customers with disconnected services. They help residents restore power and heat before severe cold arrives.
Albertans needing help with bills or payment plans can contact the Utilities Consumer Advocate at 310-4822.
