A major healthcare expansion is coming to Airdrie as provincial leaders and health officials unveil plans for the new Airdrie Covenant Health Centre, designed to deliver vital medical care to one of Alberta’s fastest-growing regions.
The sprawling project will house two interconnected state-of-the-art facilities: a new Urgent Care and Birthing Centre alongside a Primary, Surgical, and Ambulatory Care Centre. Over the past two decades, Airdrie’s population has nearly tripled from 30,000 to more than 90,000 residents. The new health hub directly addresses this dramatic surge, enabling thousands of patients to receive treatment closer to home rather than travelling to Calgary.
Once operational, the Urgent Care and Birthing Centre will manage more than 30,000 urgent care visits and support approximately 1,000 childbirths annually.
The Primary, Surgical, and Ambulatory Care Centre will have the capacity for performing up to 10,000 surgical procedures each year.
“Airdrie is one of Alberta’s fastest-growing communities, and we’re investing in its future,” said Premier Danielle Smith. “This new health centre means more surgeries, more urgent care, and new birthing and specialized services for families in Airdrie. It’s a major step forward for health care in this community and one that will serve families for generations.”
Alberta’s government is funding land acquisition and construction for the Urgent Care and Birthing Centre, while Covenant Health develops the attached primary and ambulatory facility. Covenant Health will collaborate directly with the ministries of Hospital and Surgical Health Services and Infrastructure to align capacity with projected demand across Airdrie and northern Calgary.
“As Airdrie and surrounding communities grow, people need access to more health services closer to home,” noted Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services. “This centre will help us respond to that growth and ensure health services keep pace with the needs of the community.”
Minister of Infrastructure Martin Long and Airdrie-East MLA Angela Pitt both highlighted the development as a critical investment that stretches public infrastructure capacity to match regional growth. Mayor Heather Spearman also welcomed the announcement, praising the provincial-health partnership for prioritizing the everyday medical needs of local families.
The facility marks the initial phase of the broader Airdrie Covenant Wellness Community, an integrated model that gathers diverse medical and community wellness services into a single accessible campus. Covenant Health President and CEO Patrick Dumelie emphasized that the model simplifies how residents access health services by consolidating care under one roof.
Crews expect to complete construction and open the Airdrie Covenant Health Centre to patients in 2031.
