The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has launched an investigation after a late-night police response in the southeast community of Legacy resulted in a fatal shooting and an emergency gas leak evacuation.
The incident began early Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026, when officers were called to a residence in the 200 block of Legacy Circle S.E. around 1:20 a.m. to conduct a welfare check on a female occupant.
According to officials, the woman stepped outside the home carrying a weapon at approximately 2:30 a.m. The encounter escalated quickly, leading one officer to discharge their service weapon. The woman was struck and declared deceased at the scene.
Adding to the chaos, a nearby gas meter ruptured during the incident, triggering a gas leak across the immediate area. Police began evacuating nearby residences and escorted neighbors out of harm’s way until Calgary Fire Department crews secured the scene. The cause of the rupture remains undetermined. Affected residents were permitted to return home a short time later.
Two officers received medical attention following the event—one was taken to the hospital as a precaution, while another was evaluated by paramedics on site. Both are currently recovering.
As standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, ASIRT has taken over the investigation. Because the case is now under independent review, police will not be releasing further details at this time.
