The City of Calgary has acknowledged the outpouring of community support for Parker Wells following his tragic death, while explaining the recent removal of temporary tributes in public spaces.
In the days and weeks following the tragedy, community members placed flowers, cards, stuffed animals, and other tokens of remembrance. City officials noted that while these items reflect deep care and compassion, temporary memorials exposed to the elements eventually deteriorate, creating maintenance and safety concerns. Other items, classified as graffiti under municipal bylaws, were removed according to standard operating procedures.
Prior to removing the items, the City notified those most directly affected, who expressed no concerns regarding the action.
“We understand the desire to remember Parker and the importance these tributes hold for many people,” said Doug Morgan, Chief Operating Officer of City Services. “We recognize that everyone grieves differently and that these memorials were created with heartfelt intentions.”
Morgan emphasized that the removal of the items does not diminish Parker’s memory or the community’s intent. As stewards of public spaces, municipal administration must apply bylaws consistently and fairly while balancing safety and respect.
To help establish long-lasting honors, the City is offering guidance on the official processes and requirements for permanent memorials.
“While the methods used to honour Parker may vary, the compassion and care behind them are clear,” Morgan added. “We will continue to approach this situation with respect for those grieving while applying our responsibilities fairly and consistently.”
