Is your bank account safe? Man charged with fraud

The Calgary Police Service has arrested one man tied to a widespread  bank investigator fraud scam in which offenders allegedly impersonated financial institutions and Calgary police officers using caller ID spoofing technology.

Between Saturday, June 7, 2025, and Monday, July 14, 2025, the Calgary Police Service received several reports of bank investigator fraud scams.

Scammers used phone-spoofing technology to trick victims. The calls displayed real bank phone numbers on caller ID displays. Fraudsters falsely claimed criminals compromised the victims’ accounts.

Next, scammers directed victims to talk with fake Calgary police officers. They instructed victims to seal their bank cards inside envelopes. Couriers then picked up the envelopes directly from the victims’ homes.

The fraudsters used the cards and stolen banking data to drain accounts. They made unauthorized ATM withdrawals and retail purchases.

Investigators reviewed CCTV footage and identified a suspect buying and redeeming gift cards. Officers arrested a 26-year old male of Calgary on Oct. 14, 2026.

As a result, the suspect has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime and one count of laundering the proceeds of crime. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant.

The suspect is scheduled to appears in court on Oct. 29, 2026.

Protect yourself from fraud

The Calgary Police Service reminds citizens that:

Banks and police never ask for cards: They will never request mailed bank cards, banking passwords, or money transfers.
Watch for spoofed calls: Scammers easily fake legitimate phone numbers on caller ID.
Hang up immediately: Call your bank directly using the official phone number on your card.
Keep info private: Never share passwords or PINs with unsolicited callers.
Pause before acting: Talk with a trusted family member if a caller pressures you.
