Calgary adds new fines for setting up fireworks in public places
As Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas approach, the City of Calgary, Calgary Fire Department, and Calgary Police Service wish everyone a safe and joyful celebration.
Personal fireworks are illegal in Calgary. This ban includes fireworks bought online or outside the city. Fireworks cause fires, injuries, and property damage.
“Fireworks can quickly ignite grass, vehicles, and homes,” says Fire Marshal Glenn Baxter. “We’ve seen first-hand how one firework can lead to significant property damage.”
During Diwali in 2025, police responded to 167 fireworks calls. City staff logged 44 reports through 311. Firefighters tackled grass, vehicle, and structure fires caused by illegal pyrotechnics. In one incident, hundreds of people launched thousands of fireworks over several hours.
New fines now active
The City updated its rules on Sept. 22, 2026. Officers can now ticket anyone setting up fireworks in public spaces before launch.
Current penalties include:
Selling fireworks without a permit: $3,000
Carrying fireworks in a public place: $1,000
Discharging fireworks without a permit: $1,000
“Officers can now intervene when fireworks are being prepared,” says Damian Cole, Deputy Chief of Community Safety. “This helps prevent dangerous situations before they occur.”
Last year, residents often mistook exploding fireworks for gunshots. These calls drain vital emergency resources.
Businesses facing tough rules
Selling fireworks without a permit remains strictly illegal for local businesses.
“Selling fireworks without authorization is against the law and carries significant penalties,” warns Michael Briegel, Deputy Chief of Business Safety.
How to celebrate safely
City officials encourage safe alternatives to traditional pyrotechnics:
Light diyas safely indoors and outdoors
Use flameless LED candles
Decorate homes with festive lights
Join organized community gatherings
Small birthday cake sparklers are exempt from the fireworks ban, but must be used safely and responsibly.
Citizens can report illegal fireworks activity through the 311 app under “Disturbance and Public Behaviour Concerns.” Call 911 for fires or immediate danger.
