Midnight joyride leads to major fines

On Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 12:10 a.m., police spotted a white SUV traveling south on Deerfoot Trail without its headlights on. The driver was passing aggressively and crossed a solid line to access an exit ramp.
Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over—noting a rear bicycle carrier was obstructing the license plate—but the driver sped off. The occupants soon abandoned the SUV on foot, but officers quickly caught up with them. The driver was 15 years old and the passenger was 16. The vehicle belonged to the driver’s parents and was neither registered nor insured.
Following the vehicle’s impoundment, police issued tickets to the 15-year-old driver for a dozen offenses: driving without a license, operating an uninsured vehicle, driving an unregistered vehicle, and failing to stop for police. He also faced charges for driving without headlights, crossing a solid line, having an obstructed license plate, and violating two Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) restrictions—driving unsupervised and operating a vehicle between midnight and 5:00 a.m.

The Calgary Police Service emphasized in a Facebook post that “safety starts with making responsible choices behind the wheel,” warning that “unsafe decisions put everyone at risk and carry serious consequences.”
