Good Samaritan beaten in CTrain attack!

Calgary police arrest man following random racially motivated CTrain assaults

A Calgary man faces multiple criminal charges and outstanding warrants after a random attack at the Somerset-Bridlewood CTrain station in the city’s southwest.
The incident unfolded at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, while District 8 patrol officers were conducting a proactive safety deployment at the transit station. An injured man approached the officers, reporting he had just been assaulted after stepping in to protect a woman.
According to police, an unknown suspect aggressively confronted the woman on the platform, yelled racial slurs, and struck her in the face. When the bystander intervened, the suspect assaulted him before fleeing east along the platform. The bystander sustained minor injuries.
Officers pursued the suspect on foot and established containment alongside Calgary Transit Public Safety. The suspect was prevented from re-entering the transit system and was taken into custody a short time later nearby.
Steepan Surane, 38, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of assault and one count of obstruction to a peace officer. He was also arrested on 11 outstanding warrants and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, August 21, 2026. Investigators are actively treating hate-motivation as a factor in the attack.
“This incident is deeply concerning and has no place in our community; everyone deserves to feel safe using public transit and going about their daily lives without fear of violence or hate,” said District 8 Inspector Darry Midtdal. “We remain committed to holding those responsible accountable and encouraging anyone who witnesses or experiences similar behaviour to report it to police.”
The arrest comes as part of a targeted enforcement initiative launched in mid-April. District 8 Community Resource Officers, alongside patrol units and the Community Engagement Response Team, have been conducting weekday morning deployments during peak commuter hours at the Somerset-Bridlewood, Shawnessy, and Fish Creek-Lacombe stations to tackle ongoing crime and safety concerns.
Investigators have not yet been able to speak with the woman involved in the initial assault. Police are urging her, or anyone else who witnessed the incident, to call the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
