E. Coli outbreak shuts down Calgary water park

Provincial health officials have issued a public health alert and temporarily closed Calgary’s Prairie Winds Park spray facilities following three confirmed cases of E. coli.
The Calgary Zone Medical Officers of Health and Alberta Health Services Environmental Public Health warn that individuals who visited the water park between July 25 and August 4, 2026, may have been exposed to the bacteria.
Out of an abundance of caution, the operator voluntarily closed the spray park for one week effective August 7, 2026, allowing public health inspectors to complete further testing, deep cleaning, and source tracking. Appropriate mitigation measures have already been implemented on-site to prevent further spread.

What Is STEC?

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) is a bacterium spread when a person comes into contact with infected feces and subsequently touches their mouth, often via unwashed hands.
  • Common Symptoms: Severe stomach cramps and diarrhea.
  • Complications: Dehydration is the most frequent complication. While most healthy individuals recover fully, immunocompromised individuals face higher risks and should seek prompt medical evaluation.

What to Do If You Experience Symptoms

Anyone experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal illness should stay hydrated and consider contacting Health Link at 811 or visiting a primary care provider.
To prevent spreading the infection within the community:
  • Practice Hand Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water after using the washroom, changing diapers, or handling raw meat, and before preparing or eating food.
  • Sanitize Kitchens: Clean all cooking tools and counter surfaces thoroughly before and after preparing meals.
  • Avoid Sharing: Do not share food, drinks, or eating utensils with anyone showing symptoms.
  • Stay Out of Pools: Anyone who experiences diarrhea must refrain from entering any public pool, spray park, or aquatic facility for at least two weeks after symptoms fully resolve.
  • Protect Vulnerable Groups: Individuals with symptoms should avoid close contact with young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
