Weekend wrecks leave two motorcyclists hospitalized with life-threatening injuries
Calgary Police are issuing an urgent safety reminder to all motorists following two separate weekend traffic collisions that left two motorcycle riders in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The first incident occurred on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at approximately 2:15 p.m., when a 58-year-old man riding a 2019 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling east on 130 Avenue S.E. Near the intersection of 46 Street S.E., the motorcycle struck a concrete median, throwing the rider from the bike and causing severe, life-threatening injuries.
Just over an hour later, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a second major crash unfolded on Deerfoot Trail near the Glenmore Trail exit. Police report that a 25-year-old man driving a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am in the far-right southbound lane rear-ended a 2011 Suzuki SV650 motorcycle driven by a 30-year-old man. The initial impact triggered a multi-vehicle chain reaction, forcing the motorcycle into the back of a 2011 Dodge Durango carrying five occupants, which was then pushed forward into a 2004 Toyota Camry occupied by two people. After striking the motorcycle, the Grand Am also collided with a nearby 2008 Toyota RAV4.
The 30-year-old motorcyclist was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the Grand Am sustained minor injuries.
Investigators do not believe speed, alcohol, or drugs were contributing factors in either crash. Police emphasize that both incidents serve as a critical reminder for all drivers and riders to remain fully aware of their surroundings, including road barriers and smaller vehicles that may be hard to spot.
