Fire crews and partner agencies issued an update on the landfill fire today as containment operations continue in the southeast quadrant.
Emergency commanders confirmed that the complex industrial site remains stable, safe, and fully under control.
Frontline firefighters continue to apply specialized landfill suppression techniques around the clock. Crews are covering smoldering debris with heavy soil capping to starve flames of oxygen. Additionally, workers are managing localized venting zones across the property to release trapped heat safely.
To ensure safety, the department brought in specialized landfill firefighting experts. These technical advisers evaluated site conditions and created strategic tactical recommendations. As a result, active suppression efforts followed expert guidelines to prevent flare-ups.
Meanwhile, provincial environmental partners continue monitoring air quality around neighboring communities.
Recent testing from Sept. 28 to Oct. 5 revealed no air quality safety violations.
Official Air Quality Health Index readings remained consistently in the low-risk category. Monitoring stations also confirmed low fine particulate concentrations throughout the week.
Alberta Environment continues supporting air surveillance and has reported no significant regional changes.
However, fire officials have acknowledged that nearby residents may continue to notice stronger, distinct smells.
Firefighters explained that crews occasionally produce brief odours, light smoke, or small visible flames while digging up buried material. Workers must access deep hotspots to extinguish hidden embers permanently.
Emergency teams will continue to maintain active monitoring and suppression tactics until they extinguish the fire entirely.
The Calgary Fire Department has promised to issue regular public updates as site work progresses.
