Fire crews are on scene for a second week at the ECCO Recycling facility in southeast Calgary. Work to suppress hotspots within the landfill is ongoing.
The City of Calgary issued an update, to inform the public that the fire is limited to the landfill site. Fire suppression resources are on site monitoring areas of elevated heat within the landfill pile. An underground utility access point where high temperatures were previously detected continues to be assessed.
Crews are bringing in large volumes of soil and cover material for the next phase of operations. More than 800 cubic metres of material was delivered to the site on Friday. Similar volumes are expected to arrive throughout the coming week, as crews are building protective cover over affected areas.
Air quality monitoring on and around the site continues to show that there is no immediate public safety risk beyond the landfill property.
Residents in southeast Calgary may still notice smoke or odour as weather and wind conditions change. Those sensitive to smoke must limit outdoor activities and take precautions.
