New hope for gambling addicts

The province is investing $2.4 million to support an Alberta gambling addiction treatment expansion program for residents facing compulsive gambling.

The provincial government awarded the funding to Brick House Recovery Centre. This organization delivers evidence-based therapy and specialized care for individuals and families.

Gambling problems can destroy personal finances, damage relationships, and harm mental health. Therefore, the province is funding free, recovery-focused services to help people rebuild stable lives.

“Gambling can have devastating consequences for individuals and families, harming mental health, eroding relationships and losing financial security,” said Rick Wilson, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction. “We are ensuring Albertans have access to recovery-focused supports.”

The new program offers four weeks of outpatient therapy. Afterwards, patients receive up to eight weeks of personalized aftercare support.
Residents can access in-person care in Calgary and Edmonton. Additionally, virtual programs bring support to families in rural areas across Alberta.

“If you don’t gamble today, you absolutely should not start tomorrow,” said Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta. “For Albertans who choose to gamble and are struggling, we have your back.”

Government officials plan to announce more funded recovery organizations later this fall.
