New ports alliance to revitalize Canada’s trade corridors

Key transportation hubs across Western Canada have officially established the Western Inland Ports alliance to strengthen national trade corridors and streamline supply chains.

Major logistics authorities signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding to form the Canadian Inland Ports Alliance. This collaborative agreement connects major economic hubs across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta to build a more resilient freight network.

The Western Inland Ports initiative responds directly to mounting pressures facing Canada’s commercial sector, including coastal port congestion, shifting global markets, and frequent supply chain disruptions.

The founding members include CentrePort Canada, the Global Transportation Hub Authority, Port Alberta, Leduc County, Edmonton Global, Edmonton Airports, the City of Calgary, and Rocky View County.

Federal and local leaders strongly endorsed the strategic partnership. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon emphasized that inland ports play a vital role in strengthening national trade networks and supporting local job creation through modern infrastructure investments.

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas highlighted that the regional partnership addresses ongoing trade challenges by increasing capacity and opening new commercial routes. Rocky View County Reeve Sunny Samra called the Prairie Economic Gateway a generational opportunity that will help Western Canadian businesses move goods far more efficiently.

Industry executives also underscored the economic advantages of expanding inland logistics capacity.

CentrePort Canada CEO Carly Edmundson noted that established inland ports give businesses superior flexibility, room to grow, and reliable access to international markets.

Daryn Edgar, CEO of Edmonton Global, stated that connecting inland hubs directly to global markets unlocks significant revenue opportunities for expanding companies. While Edmonton Airports CEO Myron Keehn added that modernizing digital trade strategies across air and rail networks delivers greater long-term value for all Canadians.

The formal agreement establishes a structured framework for joint planning, infrastructure advocacy, and shared investment metrics.

Representatives from Saskatchewan’s Global Transportation Hub and Leduc County affirmed that combining regional expertise, strategic rail access, and air cargo infrastructure will position the entire country for sustainable economic growth.

Alliance members will review operational progress annually to identify new opportunities for trade corridor expansion.
