A man who was trying to escape the police in a stolen vehicle by driving at a high speed in a residential area has been charged by District 6 patrol police. The incident took place in the city’s southwest on Saturday, August 22 at around 11:20 PM. A woman noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the 800 block of Stonehaven Road S.W. and spotted two strangers under her vehicle. Immediately afterwards the two got into a truck and left the area.
Police spotted the truck approximately five minutes later and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Southampton Drive S.W., north of Elbow Drive S.W. The suspect failed to stop and fled.
HAWCS was engaged to safely observe the vehicle, which was driving recklessly and operating at dangerous speeds though neighbourhoods, and on major roadways while passing vehicles on the shoulder.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., an unknown woman is said to have left the vehicle and could not be located.
Shortly after, officers successfully deployed a tire deflation device as the vehicle travelled northbound on Elbow Drive S.W.
Around midnight the suspect abandoned the vehicle, which the police determined had been stolen, and entered a residence in the 11100 block of Sacramento Drive S.W. The suspect was arrested soon after.
“With the help of HAWCS, patrol members, and our Canine and Tactical Support Units, we were able to safely apprehend the suspect who endangered the lives of Calgarians with their blatant disregard for public safety as they sped through residential areas, intersections and busy roads,” says Insp. Scott Neilson of the Calgary Police Service. “This is a great example of teamwork and coordination of multiple resources across the Service to protect the community and hold people accountable for their actions.”
Upon conducting a search of the stolen vehicle police have seized two stolen licence plates, a 2021 Haro bicycle valued at $729, a bag of break and enter tools which included a crowbar, screw drivers and wrenches, and also stolen vehicle insurance and registration documents.
Following the incident, 31-year-old Travis Lee Cramer is facing ten criminal counts, including flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operation while prohibited, six counts of possession of stolen property, and one count of possession of break-and-enter tools. Cramer is also facing two provincial offenses under the Traffic Safety Act for driving without insurance and the unauthorized use of plates. He remains in custody and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026. with information about this incident is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234.
